Local Brighton Woman “Shakes” Her Salt Habit

Brighton Beach, New York - November 14, 2016 – Whether it be a smoked salmon on your bagel, a jar of crisp briny pickles, or a

platter of your favorite zakuski, salty foods are downright irresistible. Our cravings for salty foods are practically human nature, and for some, an actual addiction. But those cravings can also be detrimental, causing a slur of health problems, from weight gain, bloating, and worst of all, high blood pressure. But for a local Brighton Beach resident, breaking the salt addiction – and breaking away from hypertension meds – was an easy task.

Just a year ago, 44-year old Russian Brooklynite Natasha Kozlov, was on two different blood pressure medications. But today,

Natasha is exploring a new chapter in her life, one that is optimistic and promising for all things family, food, and personal health. And if you ask her, she owes it all to a local nutrition organization - Halt the Salt.

Natasha enjoyed to eat a lot of high salt based foods, without ever considering how the meals would ever affect her. Whatever she ate,  whether it was a takeout or fish and chips, Natasha would always add plenty of seasoning and almost always feel the need to neglect reading the nutrition labels.

But one bright Sunday afternoon as Natasha walking home from grocery shopping, she  stumbled upon what seemed to her a

very attractive flyer and was immediately moved by the title of it. “Halt the Salt : Less Salt More Life.” “It was just a very peculiar flyer” she said, “And as I listed through the flyer I began to see how many of the pictures and information listed hit so close to home that I immediately went looking through my shopping bag.” Afterwards, Natasha went back to the grocery store to return the fish and chips, the canned tuna, the pickles, ready prepared pelmeni and instead picked up the ingredients to one of the recipes for Russian cabbage stew that was found on the brochure. What's more is that Natasha started attending Halt the Salt’s classes. “Their cooking classes are my favorite” says Natasha. “We not only learn, but we laugh, have fun, and of course, we eat”.

Ever since then, Natasha’s health has entirely changed, she no longer relies of blood pressure medications to regulate her day nor does rely on her salt cravings to hold her back from living a healthy and fulfilling life.

In addition to cooking classes, Halt the Salt holds weekly health and nutrition classes at Brighton Beach Community Center. For
